Bauhaus Museum Dessau

Collection presentation in the new Bauhaus Museum Dessau.

The new Bauhaus Museum Dessau, which opened on September 8, 2019, houses the world’s second largest Bauhaus collection with around 49,000 objects.

ENVUE HOMBURG LICHT was responsible for the exhibition lighting, from concept development to artistic direction, sampling and the illumination of the entire collection presentation.

The central architectural theme of the “black box” posed a number of challenges for the lighting design, as the space itself is conceptually as reserved as possible and virtually non-existent due to the dark room surfaces – all light is absorbed.
The exhibition design by chezweitz responds to this with strong scenographic elements by developing a central, space-dividing exhibition architecture with colored, translucent and white materials for each area. These provide reflective surfaces for the lighting design and help to contrast, accentuate and organize. In this way, it is possible to give the exhibition design and the collection presented there an outstanding stage, despite the difficult framework conditions that the given “black box architecture” provides for spatial perception.
Lighting systems integrated into the exhibition furniture and showcases as well as the necessary control components were developed and implemented in a highly integrative, conceptual and technical manner with the scenographers and the Bauhaus Foundation.
In addition to the usual project-specific challenges, the special requirements for museum and exhibition lighting had to be met:
Natural color rendering capacity of the lighting technology, homogeneous light image, flicker-free linear dimming without color shift of the LED light sources down to very low brightness values in order to be able to adequately present even very light-sensitive exhibits.
