Jahnplatz Bielefeld

New light for Jahnplatz, the surrounding traffic routes and for the new bus stop canopies. Special luminaire development of the cable pendant luminaire “Night sun”.

As part of a mobility strategy adopted by the city of Bielefeld, the square was redesigned according to the guiding principle of “climate-friendly mobility”. 25 differently sized luminaires – the “night suns” – now hover above the square. Suspended from a cable system that is as complex as it is delicate.

Each “night sun” is the result of a special handcrafted process. The outer shell is made of multi-layered fiberglass that has been precisely painted to interact with the daylight through reflections. The shell is supported by a metal structure into which light sources with different symmetrical and asymmetrical light distributions are integrated. The indirect RGBW lighting of the fiberglass shell ensures the colorful and dynamic (light) staging of the Jahnplatz on important occasions, such as the Bielefeld night views, the Bielefeld Christmas market or the traditional local Leineweber Festival. With the targeted use and differentiation of uniform, directed and indirect light, spot heights, illuminance levels and luminance on horizontal and inclined surfaces, a legible and lively lighting structure has been created at Jahnplatz. This promotes orientation and strengthens the independence of the square. The special luminaires designed and developed specifically for the project each have their own light emission characteristics and light intensity – so each “night sun” is unique in its own way. The sum of the luminaires gives the central urban square a finely tuned light depending on its usage zones.

The indirect lighting of the ring-shaped structure creates an identity-forming night scene at Bielefeld’s Jahnplatz: floating rings of light bridge the important urban axis between the new and old town!
